This is why the Ocher City has been ranked at the top of the best destinations in Africa 2019 by the American site « TripAdvisor ».
It was a long time ago when Marrakech reigned over Morocco and beyond the Sahara, Timbuktu and Niger, and the Red City of Sultan Al Mansour, Le Doré, was a beacon of West Africa to which all converged. Today, if it is no longer its imperial power and gold brought from elsewhere that make it a shining city, it is as a tourist city that prevails on the continent. And the tourists flock there from everywhere by planes as formerly the caravaneers on the back of camels …
It is indeed travelers all over the world who voted based on their opinions on the evaluation of the facilities they visited in 25 African countries. For this year 2019 the Travelers’Choice Award has been awarded in Marrakech and Mauritius for the quality of their hotels and their attractiveness.
Regarding Marrakech, if we know that La Mamounia was recently designated by a jury of professionals as the best hotel in the world, it was learned from this vote that the Ryad Kheirredine was considered the summit of luxury hotels in Africa. Tourists are fascinated by « this oasis of tranquility, with Moroccan architecture and Italian design ».
But there are so many other prestigious hotels, not to mention those that will open soon. The numbers speak for themselves in terms of tourist flows, arrivals, overnight stays and occupancy rates.
The year 2018 was exceptional and the one that is in progress looks promising. Last year there were more than 2.6 million arrivals in classified hotels and more than 8 million overnight stays overall. The occupancy rate has climbed to 60% (+4 points) but among major hotel chains, this occupancy rate was between 70 and 80%.
All traditional tourist emitting markets have experienced a clear evolution. French, Germans and Spaniards marked progressions of 14, 25 and 52% respectively. As for the new markets, the Chinese or Eastern Europe make a real boom with increases of 100 to 300%.
Indeed, there were twice as many Chinese as in the previous season and new countries such as Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland are now connected through direct flights, in addition to more flights to Germany, Switzerland and France. This makes a total of 22 additional flights in 2018 and many more already announced this year.
Not to mention the domestic tourism representing 30% of overnight stays, the second after France, thanks to Marrakech’s night life that attracts a large number of moroccan residents on weekends.
In short, there are practically no « off seasons » in Marrakech. The many events organized, at all times of the year, especially in low periods, has filled the gaps. And the CRT is working to set up a « Marrakech Convention Bureau », dedicated to the promotion of convention tourism, as well as to the « nature and adventure » segment where the province of Al Haouz is well positioned, which benefits local populations (solidarity tourism revenues).
The effort is also focused on the need to work more on digital and new information and communication technologies for better promotion.
In fine, the strategic goal of 2022 is to confirm Marrakech and its region as a « World Brand » to be on the list of the Top 20 best destinations worldwide.
